Hedy Lamarr (1914-2000) war eine österreichische Schauspielerin und Erfinderin. Sie begann ihre Karriere als Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler mit siebzehn Jahren, wenig später wurde die Traumfabrik auf sie aufmerksam. Sie änderte ihren Namen, feierte große Erfolge und galt als die schönste Frau der Filmindustrie. Neben hübschem Gesichtchen hatte Hedy allerdings auch ordentlich Köpfchen; 1942 entwickelte sie zusammen mit dem Komponisten George Antheil eine Technologie zur Verschlüsselung militärischer Nachrichten, um einem Abhören geheimer Kriegsinformationen entgegenzuwirken. Zwar war der technologische Stand für die patentierte Idee nicht ausreichend, um sie anzuwenden, allerdings ist das “Geheime Kommunikationssystem” der beiden Kreativen ausschlaggebend gewesen für die weiteren Entwicklungen militärischer Kommunikation und der Mobilfunktechnologie. Ihrem Patent des "Frequency-hopping spread spectrum" liegt beispielsweise unser heutiges Bluetooth und Wlan zu Grunde.

Hedy Lamarr (1914-2000) is first and foremost known as “The Most Beautiful Woman in Film”, yet the Austrian actress had more to offer than just a pretty face; apart from the huge success she experienced in Europe and Hollywood, Hedy also proved brilliant brains: in 1942 she and composer George Antheil patented the Secret Communication System – a technology which enabled the encoding of military information exchanges so that the communication rested secret. Though the technological level of the time had not been advanced enough to actually apply Hedy’s invention, the Secret Communication System paved the way for mobile phone technology and military communication. Their patent of the "frequency-hopping spread spectrum" is, for example, the basis of today's Bluetooth and WiFi.
